Heading into Winter Break

The Holiday season is upon us and projects are finishing up before winter break.  Students wanting to enter the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards need to register ASAP!  Entries are due on December 20.  Click on link to set up your account and make sure to follow all the guidelines.  In Photo 5-6 students are finishing up the Self Portrait/Portraiture unit.  Some terrific work being done.  On December 11,  we will have a presentation from Joe Maita about the Portland Jazz Festival collaborative project.  Students will need to start working on that project to be ready to give their files to the Advanced Graphics class as soon as we return from break.  We will continue with the Art and Music idea and work on making music videos.  One of the 5-6 students, Cobi Rusch, will be teaching us how to make fantastic videos!  I can't wait to be a student again.
The 3-4 classes are working still on the creative controls-motion and depth of field.  They are getting all the technical skills of analog photography down so that they can pursue more content based projects in second semester.

Starting 2nd Quarter

The first quarter of the school year is done.  Students in Photography 3-4 have shot, developed and are starting to print their first rolls of film.  They have worked with pinhole cameras, made cyanotypes and photograms.  They are now learning to work with filters to control contrast and learning the fine art of printing photographs in the darkroom.  The Photography 5-6 students worked on a found film project, made books with Japanese stab binding, have been learning to hand paint photographs, and printing on fiber based papers.  They are just starting a self portrait unit. 
We just began the Photo of the Week competition.  The themes were RED for 7th period and YELLOW for 8th.  Here are the winners:

Back to School-2018

Welcome to a new school year.  I am looking forward to reconnecting with students I know and meeting new ones.  I am really excited about hearing about everyone's summers, all your ideas for projects, and seeing tons of new work!
My summer was filled with artmaking.

I am in several exhibitions this fall.  I am in Portland Open Studios during the weekends of October 13-14 and 20-21, the Sitka Art Invitational during the weekend of November 3-4 and the Audubon fund raiser-Wild Arts Festival the weekend of November 17-18.  I also have a piece about my mom in a beautiful show with the theme "The Sacred" curated by photographer Robert Adams at the Lightbox Photographic Gallery in Astoria.

I did get to go on a couple trips.  I went to Tucson to see my brother and do some birding.  Here is an image I made from that trip.

We spent several days at Black Butte with all of my husbands relatives.  On the way home we took an amazing wildflower hike-Iron Mountain.

I also went to Chicago to see my sister and to go to the Radiohead concert.  During that trip, my husband and I drove down to St. Louis to visit my son.  I stopped in at the house I grew up in.  I haven't been there for over 10 years.

Lastly I went to Pennsylvania to watch my nephew get married.  While there, I visited the gorgeous Longwood Gardens.

Just like last year, I am only working part time and will be here only on B days.  I continue to be the main caregiver to my mom who lives with my husband and me.

The Final Push

I have been amiss in not posting anything lately.  I guess it is spring fever.  Lots has been happening in photography.  Students are getting in to the college of their choices and figuring out their summer plans.  Several students have received well deserved accolades on their work lately-Both Ruby McShane and Libby Lazzara have won nice scholarships based on their work.  Libby and Berritt Heinz Morris are National Scholastic Art winners.  Their pieces are on their way to NewYork City!
The 3-4 students continue to make some excellent photo essays.  There is so much variety in the techniques, presentations, and subject matter.   Check out the work below.

Portland Jazz Festival Winner

Congratulations to Gaby Talbert and Asa Miller for their winning design in the Portland Jazz Festival contest.  Lincoln has been collaborating with the PDX Jazz Festival for the past 5 years.  Photo students team up with graphics students to create a jazz poster for the festival.  There were so many terrific entries.  All the work was shown at the Portland Art Museum in the Sunken Ballroom.  The winning posters will be enlarged to 4x4 and displayed in the downtown Target window throughout the festival.  Congratulations Gaby and Asa!!

Semester 2

First semester finished with some nice portfolios of work from the 3-4 students and interesting pieces from the 5-6 students.
Big Congratulations to Ruby McShane for earning a Scholastic Arts Gold Key for her stunning portfolio of work.  Individual Gold Key winners are Annie Devoe (2 gold keys, 6 Honorable Mentions), Berritt Heinz Morris (2 Gold Keys, 2 Honorable Mentions)  Libby Lazzara, Alex Melville (Gold Key, 3 Honorable Mentions), and Hazel Lucey (Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention).  These students gold key works will be on exhibit at PNCA opening on February 1, 4-7p.m. and closing on the 24th of February.
